A letter from Slovenia to Catalonia
“Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!” Dear people of Catalonia. The Spanish police beat you up before you could spill it, like an abusive partner. The Catalonia and Spain relationship status is beyond “It’s complicated”. It happened because you long indulgently wanted to live in union with Spain, and I think that now you feel exploitative and terrible all over. Who is anyone to judge you? Independence now!
Slovenia had a similar experience. We detested our partnership with the Balkan states, all of them so macho and just using us! Why beat about the bush. That's why we called it quits. BUT! Instead of working out our issues, like they say, we immediately entered into a new relationships. With such glee and joy! We fell in love with the glamorous European Union because of their democratic allure. And just a lure it was. Slovenia fell into the arms of the biggest and the baddest - NATO. While Slovenia seemingly escaped this very undesirable relationship, we found ourselves in the land we can hardly call our own. Guess what? We got surrounded with barbed wire in 2017! Sometimes in the night, when no one is looking, we long for our old Balkan. Though we will never admit that.
Dear Catalonia, before you try to reach for the European Stars alone, make sure they are not just a comfortable illusion in the dark days you are going through right now. While you still have the Spanish fist on your face, don't recklessly try to replace it with a NATO tank. What hurts more?
You may end up buying Dutch food, German cars, Chinese clothes and American weapons and feel proud. With an aftertaste of being sold out. Yes, it happened to us, if you must know. The Slovenian politicians turned out to be independently corruptible, and now we cannot even blame the Balkan states anymore. We are not just biting our nails in shame; we have already swallowed the whole arm! So, Catalonians take care, that you don't soon start dancing to the tunes of a depressing Brussels waltz or a NATO march instead of your passionate flamenco!
Spain didn't allow Catalonia to stop the bullfights. That pretty much summons up their soft touch. You should ban them anyway, and the people all around the globe will stand with you! Do not give in! Don't support the Spanish court, your royalty, and the sort parading around at the expense of your working class. Pack them of into a fairytale - be gone paparazzi idle class!
Dear people of Catalonia. Divorce or no divorce, we support you. Just make sure, that some ''uncle'' like Soros doesn't start whispering in your ear. He will want much more than just to touch your knee when the time comes. If you will listen to the angels, it is up to you. But take care with the sort like Angela. Never forget, that if anyone claims that God is on their side, make sure it is not just the Vatican doing their dirty business as usual. The Spanish Inquisition, remember?
If you divorce, you might find it easier in long term to be friends with the one you share children with. And you do. Don't allow others to profit from your dream. We learned that the hard way.
Slovenia shares many values with Catalonia, being proud of our language, dedication to social equality and above all, we share a strong antifascist past.
